Windsor will welcome up to 1,000 of the world’s best swimmers from over 172 countries as they compete for World Championship glory in the 13th edition of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m). Expected to draw more than 35,000 spectators, this elite competition will bring the world’s best swimmers together to compete for 46 gold medals over 6 days in a temporary world championship pool to be constructed within the WFCU Arena. It has also been announced that Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, will be making a visit to Windsor for this great event!
As the first time ever to be hosted in Canada, this international event will showcase Windsor on the global stage. Known for our powerful and dynamic manufacturing sector, Windsor is the perfect backdrop for this world-class display of performance, strength and dedication. With every stroke in the water, the character of our city will be reflected, providing an exciting opportunity for everyone to feel the power!
Essex Receives Funding for New Zoomers and Youth Programs
The Town of Essex was awarded grant funding from the Government of Ontario to run an exciting program for Zoomers (Ages 50+) to attend a variety of lunch and learn events, participate in fitness activities and earn fitness passes and connect with other Zoomers in the community. Thanks to the grant funding, Zoomers are able to participate free of charge!
On average, fifty people have attended each of the first three sessions where they have had the opportunity to learn about staying fit and independent from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, participate in a variety of Town of Essex sport and fitness programs, and visit John R. Park Homestead for an exciting hour of activity along with a stop for a delicious lunch at Oxley Estate Winery as they explored the community!
Four more lunch and learn events are planned in the coming months where participants will have the opportunity to learn how to protect themselves, eat healthy, get involved and stay connected with assistance from our outstanding community partners.

The Town of Essex received a grant through the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund to start a new Youth Gymnastics program. The grant covered the cost to purchase a substantial amount of equipment, to train staff in NCCP level coaching, and to create lesson plans, test sheets and report cards for a 3-level gymnastics program. The program started this Fall with great success having 46 children registered on Saturday mornings. The grant will be in place for 2 years to help offset the cost of the instructors, and to run a Gymnastics Camp program in the Summer of 2017.
